Get Out There!

As temperatures heat up during the summer months, outdoor activities tend to increase. This increase in activity unsurprisingly brings with it an increased risk of back injuries. Fortunately, taking simple preventative measures can ensure that you stay safe and healthy as you partake in your favorite summertime activities.

One of the most important and easily-forgotten steps is staying hydrated. Given that our bodies are mostly composed of water, we must be mindful to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Without enough liquids in our system, we can develop muscle cramps or even experience dizziness: both of which can pose serious risks to athletes and weekend warriors alike while they are engaged in activity. But staying hydrated goes far beyond simply preventing discomfort: it also helps keep our joints and disks functioning properly, thus playing an important role in preventing back pain and ensuring a fun time outdoors this summer!

To guarantee you remain hydrated while partaking in outdoor activities, make sure to carry a water bottle on you at all times. Sports drinks may also come in handy here - as will naturally-hydrating fruits and veggies like watermelon, celery, strawberries, lettuce, cucumbers and spinach (which just happen to make for great snacks during picnics or barbecues too). Remember: if you're feeling thirsty when out in the heat - you're already dehydrated!
